CPAP Therapy: Getting Started & Basics

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea refers to recurring pauses in breathing during sleep. These can significantly disrupt sleep and cause people to feel unrefreshed despite getting enough sleep. A doctor-prescribed CPAP therapy can help keep the airways open during sleep.

How does CPAP therapy work?

A CPAP device generates continuous positive airway pressure. This is delivered through a breathing tube and mask and can prevent the upper airways from collapsing during sleep.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a widespread sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. The most common form is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Typical symptoms include loud snoring, daytime sleepiness, and concentration problems.

What Is a CPAP Device?

CPAP stands for “Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.” The device generates a gentle airflow that keeps the airways open and prevents pauses in breathing. A CPAP system consists of a device, hose, and mask.

First Steps with CPAP

  • Wear the mask briefly during the day at first to get used to it
  • Clean the mask and hose daily
  • Use a humidifier if you have dry airways
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience problems

Health Insurance & Cost Coverage

For diagnosed sleep apnea, statutory health insurance funds cover the costs of the CPAP device, mask, and accessories—provided that a doctor’s prescription is available.
